How do actors choose their roles and collaborate with directors? To what extent do they want to be involved in creating characters? How has the selection of their roles influenced their career so far? Renowned German actress Nina Hoss (Barbara, Gold), who has worked with many directors associated with the Berlin School including Thomas Arslan and Christian Petzold, talks with Talent actors and directors about the various approaches she takes to the filmmaking process.

Peter Cowie
A film historian and former international publishing director of Variety magazine, Peter Cowie has written more than 30 books on major figures and eras of world cinema, including Bergman, Welles, Coppola and Kurosawa. He published and edited the annual International Film Guide for 40 years and has contributed numerous commentaries to Criterion’s DVD collection. He has been a consultant to Berlinale Talents since the programme’s inception in 2003.

Nina Hoss
Nina Hoss is one of Germany’s most well respected actors today. She is a Board Member of the European Film Academy and has served on several juries, including the Venice Film Festival as well as the Locarno Film Festival. Nina won the Best Actress Award at the San Sebastián Film Festival for her performance in “The Audience”, Best Actress for her role in Christian Petzold’s “Phoenix” at the Toronto Film Critics Association Awards and received a Silver Bear for her performance in “Yella”. She made her English Debut in Showtime’s “Homeland”. Her latest role is in Todd Field’s “TÁR”.
