What does sustainability mean to the film industry? While filmmakers have begun adopting greener production practises, the question of sustainability on a social level might look like remains largely unanswered. Indeed, much remains to be done when it comes to equality and inclusiveness. But here as in many other domains, our Talents are a step ahead of the game: three Talents alumni talk about their initiatives in the presence of socially engaged actor Zazie Beetz and producer Jonas Weydemann, the two jury members who selected them to become the 2022 Mastercard Enablement Programme fellows. Their pragmatic proposals for change come in the form of three different approaches for our work on film sets and beyond. But what unites them is a commitment to the creation of a more sustainable society, an endeavour worthy of our utmost attention.

Zazie Beetz

The German-born, American actress and Emmy®-nominated Zazie Beetz is best known for her co-lead role in the Golden Globe-winning series ATLANTA. In 2019, Beetz appeared in the Oscar-winning DC Comics’ thriller, JOKER alongside Joaquin Phoenix and Robert De Niro. The film premiered in competition at the 2019 Venice Film Festival, where it won the coveted Golden Lion Award, before receiving 11 Academy Award nominations, including Best Picture. Currently, she stars alongside Winston Duke in the Sony Classic’s feature NINE DAYS, nominated at the 2020 Sundance Film Festival for the coveted Grand Jury Prize. Next, among other highly-anticipated films, Beetz will star in the first ever all-Black American Western feature film from Netflix, THE HARDER THEY FALL, alongside Jonathan Majors leading an all-star ensemble cast.
